Pro Tools’ Replace Clip Function – How to Use it and Go Beyond It

Post 1

Here’s how to replace a sound with another using Avid Pro Tools’ Replace Clip functionality, step by step, with this in-depth post-production guide

If you find yourself needing to replace one sound with another in Pro Tools, there are multiple ways to get the job done, but one method we all have available is the DAW’s own “Replace Clip” function. In this article, you’ll learn how to use Pro Tools’ Replace Clip function to swap out sounds in your audio project, and what other methods you can use to accomplish the same.

A tool that can supersede Pro Tools’ Replace Clip function is Audiokids Synchronicity Sound and Foley Replacer, an AudioSuite plugin that automatically replaces one type of sound with another, as large batches, in perfect time alignment.

Audiokids Synchronicity Sound and Foley Replacer has much more flexibility than Pro Tools’ Replace Clip function, letting you replace multiple audio ‘events’ like footsteps or gunshots with multiple new ones. You can ‘round robin’ the effects by level matching or randomizing.

Step 1: Labelling and preparing your clips

The first step when switching out audio is to ensure the clips you want to substitute are labelled correctly, as the ‘Replace Clip’ function will only replace clips with the same name. For larger recordings that may have specific moments that need replacing, chop the clips you want to replace and label them accordingly (see image below).

Using the tab-to-transient shortcut on Pro Tools and Cmd-E or Ctrl-E (or B) will ensure more instantaneous sounds, such as percussion hits or footsteps, are split at the moment of impact, making sure your replacement sounds sync up (if they are edited and exported also at the moment of impact).

Step 2: Dragging and dropping/selecting your audio

The ‘Replace Clip’ function can be triggered by holding down Command-Shift (For Mac) or Ctrl-Shift (for PC), while dragging the desired replacement audio from the clip menu onto the clip(s) you wish to replace. In this case, it will replace all clips labelled ‘Replace Me’ with the desired pre-recorded sound.

You can also select the clip you want to replace on your track, and right-click on your desired replacement sound in the clip list. Highlight your intended clip to replace on your track > Right click on the replacement audio in the clip menu > Select ‘Replace Clip’.

Step 3: Replace Clip menu

Once you have either dragged or dropped your desired clip or used the right-click shortcut in the clip list, the ‘Replace Clip’ menu will appear. For this demonstration, we’ll replace all clips labelled ‘Replace Me’ on this specific track with a pre-recorded sound.

The ‘Replace Clip’ function can be used to replace all stand-in sounds in the project (IE, on multiple tracks) with the chosen replacement. Or inversely, if you have multiple uses of a sound which shares the same name, you can replace only the clip selected and leave the rest as is.

You can also specify how the replacement clip is integrated within the timeline. IE, its length can be dictated by the length of the track you are replacing, making sure it doesn’t overlap or affect neighbouring clips.

Once you have chosen your desired parameters, hit Enter/OK to replace the clips.

Moving Beyond Pro Tools’ Replace Clip Function

With plugins like Audiokids Synchronicity Sound and Foley Replacer, you can go much deeper into clip replacement. It’s an Audiosuite plugin (Mac only) that lets you select your original audio and replacement audio on the Pro Tools timeline, then swap the old with the new, while keeping each ‘event’ in perfect timing.

Find out more about the plugin and see examples on our Audiokids Synchronicity Sound and Foley Replacer page.
