Ambience Match? You Might Prefer Undertone 2

Post 1

Discover Undertone 2, a plugin (VST/AU/ AudioSuite) built to match the room tone between ADR and Post dialogue. It might be a cheaper and better solution for you

iZotope’s Ambience Match processor is a module inside RX Advanced that is designed to match the noise floor sound (room tone) of one recording with another.

Undertone 2 is a plugin with the same objective but with more flexibility in its operation. It also costs less and runs as a familiar plugin format in many DAWs and NLEs.

Undertone 2 is Fast and Flexible

Once you add a sample of either room tone or original dialogue into Undertone 2, in many cases it can take under one second before it’s outputting a constant bed of ambience. Here’s a two-step guide getting started with Undertone 2.

Step 1: Add Undertone 2 to a new channel in your DAW or NLE.

Step 2: Into Slot 1, load a sample of room tone or full dialogue with room tone behind it.

Step 3: There is probably no step 3. Undertone is likely now generating room tone.

Getting Undertone to work is even easier than 1, 2, 3

You can change the settings of Undertone’s granular or convolution engines to customize your room tone, and you can blend the sound of both or use just one.

Ambience Match is Only Available as Part of RX

iZotope’s RX suite of audio repair tools is a legendary package for audio post and music uses, but the whole package is exactly what you have to buy in order to gain access to the Ambience Match plugin.

Since Ambience Match is only available in iZotope’s RX Advanced tier (at the time of writing this), it’s a considerable purchase decision to make. There are lots of great modules within RX, but if Ambience Match is the only one you’re interested in or need, then Undertone competes better on price.

Undertone 2 Works with More DAWs in More Formats

iZotope’s Ambience Match works as a module in RX, a larger software package, and is also installed as an AudioSuite plugin for Pro Tools when RX is installed. Undertone 2 doesn’t run as a standalone app, instead functioning only as a plugin. Undertone’s plugin formats are AudioSuite (like RX Ambience Match), plus VST, Audio Units (AU) and AAX for Pro Tools.

Undertone 2 Can Remove Dialogue Without Your Input

While Ambience Match can remove dialogue to define the ‘noise floor’ or ‘room tone’ with help from the user setting the Ambience Threshold, Undertone does this entirely automatically. Even if you import an audio file containing full dialogue on top of background ambience, the plugin will automatically select all the parts not containing dialogue and use only these to generate ambience.
