Ambience Match for Pro Tools (AudioSuite or Plugin)
Discover Undertone 2 and how easy it can be to replace room tone and ambience when editing dialogue and ADR for film and TV
Audio editors who are Pro Tools users can make editing dialogue simpler thanks to our AudioSuite-enabled plugin, Undertone 2.
Pro Tools users need to match ambience when matching dialogue recordings taken in different environments. This could be necessary when ADR (dialogue replacement) is used with a professional studio recording (dubbing), or when two takes of location audio have very different background noise.
The Old Way to Create Dialogue Fills and Match Room Tone
Until recently, the best way to match ambience was to purposely record room tone (ambience only) while no other sounds were being made. This room tone sound could then be chopped up and faded in and out where it was needed to patch silent holes created when replacing original dialogue recordings. The process would once have looked like this:
The NEW Way to Match Ambience and Room Tone – with Undertone 2
Instead of chopping up your room tone or finding it yourself, Undertone 2 makes every step of the process easier and quicker. You can load your room tone sample into Undertone, and whenever you start playback in Pro Tools, the plugin will output an infinite version of what you just imported.
Undertone works partly through granular processes: It cuts up tiny slices of the sound and plays the slices while fading between them. It can also work using convolution processes, which generate a similar ambience with the same frequency distribution using mathematical processes. In Undertone, you can use granular, convolution, or a blend of both.
Simple Ambience Matching with the Benefits of AudioSuite
Thanks to AudioSuite, Pro Tools users can print a region of Undertone’s output at exactly the length they need for a particular project, right onto the timeline. This makes it very simple to add ambience into gaps where new dialogue has been added or where extra time has been added in ‘silences’ between original dialogue phrases.
With Undertone 2, you Don’t Even Need Room Tone Recordings
You don’t even need to give the plugin a dedicated room tone sound. Undertone 2 can strip out the ambience from an imported full dialogue recording and generate more of it as the output of its track. Thanks to some smart detection capabilities, Undertone’s Sample Editor can automatically select only the gaps between recorded speech, and thanks to the rest of the plugin working so well, it takes just seconds to produce the perfect room tone sound that lasts as long as you want.
